What is Nickel corrosion?

Nickel corrosion can be a result of exposure to acids, chlorides, or high temperature

Nickel has been using for plating for hundreds of years due to its relatively passive nature and good mechanical properties. Nickel's passivity is a result of a layer of nickel oxide which forms when it is exposed to air, protecting it from corrosion over larger areas. However, it is still weak to localized attacks by ions like Chlorine (salty environment), acids, or high temperature. These caustic situations attack weak areas in the passivated layer and create pitting, shown below.1 Pitting can be very small and therefore difficult to spot with the naked eye. However, with extended exposure to the corrosive environment, pits can grow larger and deeper to the point of being able to see them without a microscope. These areas may also be a starting point for many stress cracking mechanisms.


Pits may continue all the way down to the base metal beneath, exposing it to corrosive environments as well. Additionally, areas with pitting will grow larger with time and cover more of the surface. Eventually, the corrosive material may work its way underneath the Nickel plating and cause the plating to begin flaking off of the underlying metal. At this point, the base metal is extremely exposed and will corrode quickly.

To show how LILO-BL protects the Nickel-plated surface, two Nickel-plated samples are shown below after ASTM B117 salt spray testing for 96 hours, with an extra 48 hours of immersion in salt solution. The image on the left shows a corroded, pitted Nickel plating as a result of the exposure to Chlorine in the salt spray. However, the sample with LILO-BL on the right shows a clear surface, despite experiencing an intensely corrosive environment for almost a week.
